The Chair

Mobility Solutions by Keryell and Co

The Chair is our latest invention, developed for individuals with mobility issues. After many years of hard work, we have achieved a granted patent status, which we are very proud of.

The Chair was originally conceived after a downturn in my mobility. I found it difficult and sometimes impossible to do day-to-day activities suddenly. Floor exercises were prescribed, but I couldn’t get down to do them and definitely couldn’t get up either. So I put my thinking cap on and “The Chair” was born.

The Chair works on a scissors concept. At the medium height, it fits nicely at a dining room table and doesn’t look overly “disabled and plastic”. This chair has the unique ability to allow the user to raise it both up higher and to floor level that other products do not have. If you raise it, then you can sit comfortably at counter height in a standard kitchen. This enables safe food preparation, allowing you to see what you are doing. A standard chair means you are looking up at what you are preparing and are likely to drop things on yourself. The chair has lockable wheels so you can move easily around either with your foot while sitting or using the kitchen counter with your hand.

The counter-height option is good for reaching higher cupboards or for sitting on if you are fatigued. If you have the capacity, it can be utilised as a temporary walker too, so you can transfer heavier items like a full washing basket around the house by placing it on the seat.

The Chair has lowering capacities which go fully down to the floor level. The chair can be stopped at any height, which allows the user to access low cupboards, paint skirting boards, reach under the bed, or get to the back of the fridge while cleaning. The Chair has two arm containers where small tools or a mobile phone could be stored in so that your hands are free. The lowering and raising facilities are achieved via a handle that can be mounted on either side of the chair. It allows you to smoothly descend and then ratchet yourself up. There is no electricity required to operate the standard model, but the patent does include the option to add an electric version.

By swapping the wheels to outdoor versions, the chair could be used in the garden or in the garage to achieve light garden or car activities. Such as planting, weeding, checking tyre pressures or oil, and hanging out the washing.

There are opportunities to offer this as an online purchase and to work with the disabled community in creating work-from-home sales jobs, and therefore providing a direct insight into the disabled market.

The Chair could be utilised by landlords for their multiple occupancy properties so that they are more suitable for some newly elderly/disabled people. For example: - a toilet which is too small for a wheelchair to access, or kitchen counters being too high. This would require individual assessment based on the difficulties being suffered. But as disabled-adapted properties are in short supply, it may make the wait to move to one less traumatic or solve the problem completely.

Many people every day fall, and some are unable to get up independently. They are left lying on the floor, unable to get help. Even those with family members present may still have a long wait ahead, as they physically cannot lift the fallen person. The Chair provides an option. It can be lowered even if you are not sitting in it, and can be rolled to where the person is if necessary. By allowing the person to shuffle onto the chair at its lowest point gently, it minimises any damage to the fallen person and their relatives. If extra assistance is needed, the graduated cushioned ramp can be used, which lowers the height even further. Once aboard, the Chair can be raised easily. This allows the fallen person to independently get themselves up and manoeuvre to seek help.

Health is important for everyone, not just those who are able-bodied. It becomes a problem when accessibility prevents someone from participating. The Chair could be purchased by Gyms, Yoga Studios, and Leisure Centres to assist in the accessibility of their services. Physiotherapists could even rent a lightweight Chair out to their clients to tackle the fear of being trapped on the floor while exercising. It would allow limited mobility individuals to access floor-based exercises with confidence and increase overall participation. Those who are unable to leave the chair could even do some exercises whilst lying flat within it by utilising the graduated cushioned ramp under their legs.

Disabilities are a global problem, and although many countries have provisions for those with disabilities, many do not. I am hoping that there would be a provision for the Chair to find its way to help those disabled people who cannot afford any of the more expensive disability equipment.
